This site explores the many aspects of gardening in a woodland or shade setting. Unlike a traditional garden site, Ferns & Feathers does not focus on only pretty flowers. Its focus is on using native trees, shrubs, plants and flowers to provide food and habitat for native birds, pollinators and wildlife in a Woodland/Wildlife garden. I hope it is a resource for homeowners looking to rewild their traditional garden.
Ferns & Feathers also puts a focus on attracting and photographing backyard birds, butterflies, insects and mammals.
The website, and accompanying newsletter, explore garden design, landscaping techniques, patios and landscape design solutions. Please consider joining our Woodland community by signing up for the free weekly newsletter by going to the Home Page and using the sign-up form on the bottom of the page.
I am honoured that Ontario Nature has chosen to recognize my work on this website with the 2022 Ontario Nature Media and Conservation Award. Ontario Nature is an outstanding organization that is doing outstanding work in protecting the environment both in their words and their actions. They are deserving of everyones’ support.
Vic MacBournie is an author and former journalist whose love for photography of the natural world has inspired him to create a woodland and wildlife garden over the last 22-23 years at his home in Ancaster, Ontario, Canada in zones 5-6.
His property has been designated a wildlife habitat and recognized for land stewardship by the local Conservation Authority. He lives with his wife, Julie, and furry family member Holly (a very cute mixed breed rescue). See her incredible story here.
Vic’s woodland garden was featured in the Hamilton Spectator daily newspaper in 2020. The multi-page article can be found here:
